About the Flutes in Columbia Flute Choir
We are often asked about the different flutes we play. Some of the larger flutes are
relatively new inventions and many people have never seen or heard them. Read more
about the different flutes below.
The flutes are (from left to right): FLUTE (C FLUTE), PICCOLO, BASS FLUTE,
ALTO FLUTE, CONTR'ALTO FLUTE, CONTRABASS FLUTE, 8 feet in length,
and the SUB CONTRABASS FLUTE IN G, a full 12 feet in length.
PICCOLO - the smallest (sounding one octave above the concert flute)
FLUTE - the standard concert flute, built in the key of C
ALTO FLUTE - in the key of G, one fourth below the concert flute
BASS FLUTE - in the key of C (one octave below the concert flute)
CONTR'ALTO FLUTE - in the key of G (one octave below the alto flute)
CONTRABASS FLUTE - in the key of C (one octave below the bass flute)
SUB CONTRABASS FLUTE IN G - in the key of G (one octave below the contr'alto flute)
